The ultimate arctic challenge

In a small group we will cross the untouched Finnish wilderness, skiing from 8-18km a day. As you gain confidence on the skis we will begin exploring the arctic fjells and earning some of the best views in Lapland. You will complete 6 days of skiing, experience sleeping in remote wilderness cabins, and the possibility to catch the northern lights. Being with an experienced wilderness guide you can spend the evenings learning more about Finnish nature, the art of whittling and how to build the perfect fire. At the end of the week having skied around 100km and experienced some extreme temperatures (which can be as low as -30) you’ll be ready for a celebratory dinner, a nice Finnish sauna and, maybe even an ice dip!

Accommodation

During the trip we spend the first and final night in a hotel, and the rest of the time we are using the wilderness cabins in the national park. The huts are basic, they have no electricity and include bunks for sleeping in and an outdoor dry toilet.

Please note that since this is a remote wilderness tour, some changes to the itinerary are possible on the location due to weather and similar reasons. Therefore we will carry tents as a safety precaution.

Ready for an adventure?

This is the perfect week-long backcountry adventure for skiers, not necessarily with any previous experience of backcountry or cross country skiing, but who are looking for a new experience away from the crowds. For this tour you should be good health, have a strong level of fitness as we will ski about 12-20km a day, with a few climbs involved.

If you’re looking for a proper wilderness experience or are keen to get the feel of ski touring without getting into terrain that’s too steep or technical. The Finnish arctic is the perfect destination for both of these.

Any other questions? (FAQ)

What should I pack?

For some handy tips on what you might want to pack click here

Where do I fly to?

The best place is Ivalo Airport (30 minute bus away from our starting point) or Rovaniemi Airport which requires you to get a 2.5 hour bus to our starting point. We can help you organise transport from either of these airports to our starting point.

What should my skiing ability be?

If you have some previous experience of downhill or cross-country skiing but are yet to discover the adventure and challenge of a ski touring expedition then this will be perfect for you. Although the techniques and equipment have much more in common with cross country skiing than with downhill skiing it helps to have some experience being on skis before.

What If I've never skied before?

Give us a call and we can have a chat. It's not impossible for you to join the tour with no experience but we'd need to have a chat beforehand and make sure we can get you up to speed.

What will the group size be?

We keep our groups nice and small, so we run the trips with a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 6.

What is the food like?

When we stay in the hotel/cabins we will have a buffet breakfast and dinner in the restaurant. When we are in the wilderness the cabins only have a basic gas stove so we eat expedition style food. We will provide snacks but suggest you bring some of your own too.

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes, travel insurance is a must. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the appropriate insurance to cover you for all aspects this trip, including cancellation.
